Introduction. The methods more commonly associated with coalmining in the past, like the pithead winding gear, cages of men being lowered down, and pit ponies pulling wooden hutches of coal below ground, really only started to appear in the latter half of the 19th century.
The introduction of the steam engine to hoist coal was a major turning point for the industry. Small steam-powered windlasses were successfully tried out about 1770. About 1840 the first cage was used to hoist the loaded car; and from 1840 onward advances in coal-mining techniques were rapid.
The total amount of hard coal and ore mining and processing waste laying in dumps at the end of 2000 was 1253.5 Mt that was 63.4% of total amount of all wastes disposed throughout the country. Of that, hard coal mining waste comprised 53.3% and metal ore (copper) mining and processing, 46.7%.
