calcitic or dolomitic limestone
Calcite is a form of calcium carbonate, a type of calcium salt oxide with three atoms of oxygen bonded to one atom of calcium. Calcite binds with other compounds to create limestone which is used in construction. When using these substances as building materials, the differences between calcite and limestone become clear.
Dolomite may refer to: . Dolomite (mineral), a carbonate mineral Dolomite (rock), also known as dolostone, a sedimentary carbonate rock Dolomite, Alabama, unincorporated community in Jefferson County; Dolomite, California, unincorporated community in Inyo County; Dolomites, section of the Alps; Triumph Dolomite (1934–40), sporting cars made by Triumph Motor Company

Composition. Ooids are most commonly composed of calcium carbonate (calcite or aragonite), but can be composed of phosphate, clays, chert, dolomite or iron minerals, including hematite.Dolomitic and chert ooids are most likely the result of the replacement of the original texture in limestone.
Use dolomitic lime if the Ca:Mg ratio is above 10:1. If the Ca:Mg ratio is in between 7 and 10, look at the base saturation of Mg and Ca. If Ca saturation is below 65%, use calcitic lime. If Mg saturation is below 10 %, use dolomitic lime. If both are above or both are below these minimums, use calcitic lime.

Dec 03, 2013· Limestone vs Dolomite Both limestone and dolomite are types of rock made of carbonate residues. The patterns of the way they behave chemically are almost the same with varied intensities. However, the structure and the formation of these rocks are quite different. Limestone Limestone mainly consists of two types of minerals; namely, calcite and aragonite.
Dolomite versus calcite The choice between a calcitic and dolomitic material should be based on availability, price, and agronomic effectiveness. As stated before, calcitic limestone is made up of calcium carbonate, whereas, dolomitic limestone is a mixture of calcium and mag-nesium carbonate. Dolomitic limestone reacts some-
Dec 13, 2016· Calcitic and dolomitic lime are two types of regular old limestone. One has more calcium, the other more magnesium. Both come in pelletized or powder form. Both work at roughly the same speed. Depends on what your soil needs. I prefer calcitic, as I find most soils need more calcium. Solucal, and it's knock offs, are faster acting products.
Calcitic dolomite and dolomite form mostly in the shallow to deep burial environment, where magnesium in circulating subsurface waters partially replaces calcium and converts calcium-rich limestone into magnesium-rich limestone through a process called dolomitization, which is nearly complete for dolomite and partially complete for calcitic dolomite.
Oct 25, 2006· Tim, I can do one better than that. Yesterday I bought some calcitic pellitized lime from a fertilizer dealer who had never heard of Dolomitic lime. Dolomitic lime is the norm in my area and what everybody else sells and this dealer has never heard of it?????
Lime with a high calcium content is referred to as calcitic lime and has the benefit of adding calcium to the soil. Some limestone contains a significant amount of magnesium and is referred to as dolomitic lime. Dolomitic lime adds magnesium to the soil and may be recommended if soil tests indicate a magnesium deficiency.
Limestone helps balance soil pH to create a better soil environment for your lawn, which significantly reduces these problems. Pennington 30 lb. Fast Acting Lime Plus AST is more concentrated than regular dolomitic limestone, so you have to use only 30 lbs. to cover 5000 sq. ft.

Enter our SuperHero - Calcitic Lime (Queue the fan fair)! When it comes to choosing a Lime product to apply to your lawn (or have applied by a genuine Nutri-Lawn expert) the first question you should ask yourself, do you want the results now, or 10 years from now? The first option is Dolomite Lime.
Dec 17, 2015· In some areas, the local and most economical source of agricultural lime is from a dolomitic limestone quarry. Calcitic lime may need to be trucked a longer distance, or vice versa. Either way, one source of lime may be cheaper than the other. In this case, it may have been applied repeatedly over many years.
Sep 29, 2012· Get what you can find locally, be it calcitic or dolomite lime. I promise you that it isn't going to make a bit of difference in the end. Calcitic vs dolomite lime should come down to what you have available and what your budget will allow. I use calcitic lime because that's what I can get at the feed store and that's what I've used for years.
Apr 26, 2017· Calcitic lime contains calcium carbonate only. Dolomitic lime is a mixture of calcium and magnesium carbonates that contains at least six percent magnesium. Most of the lime used for agricultural purposes is dolomitic.
Nov 10, 2011· Calcite vs Dolomite Dolomite and calcite are minerals containing calcium carbonate. Both of these are hard to distinguish from each other except for few properties. Calcite Calcite is a mineral, which contains calcium carbonate (CaCO3). This is an abundant mineral on the earth surface. Calcite can form rocks, and they may grow up to […]
Hydrated Lime. Both calcitic lime and dolomitic lime can be processed into hydrated lime, also known as slaked lime. Ground limestone is heated in an oven to produce burnt lime.
Nov 20, 2011· Calcitic lime is most often applied to lawns but may also benefit garden plants, shrubs and flowers. Dolomitic Lime: Dolomitic lime is mined in the same manner as calcitic lime and is also crushed and sold in either finely ground powder form or pellets. Dolomitic lime provides both calcium and magnesium. Dolomitic
Pelletized Dolomitic Limestone is finely ground pulverized limestone with an organic binder to form a pellet. Limestone is a natural mineral which neutralizes acid and toxic elements, improves soil structure, promotes healthy bacteria and enhances nutrient availability and disease resistance.
Calcitic lime also works more quickly than dolomite lime: Calcium carbonate is better at balancing pHs than magnesium carbonate, and calcitic lime contains much higher levels of calcium carbonate than dolomite lime. Calcitic Lime’s Limitations. Typical calcitic lime treatments require some patience.
May 13, 2019· These rocks contains 10 to 50 percent of dolomite and more of calcite, which varies from around 50-90 percent. A rock is referred to as dolomitic limestone, only when the dolomite percentage is more than 10 percent and less than 50 percent.
Dec 13, 2018· Calcitic limestone dissolves faster than dolomitic limestone so it quickly adjusts a growing medium's pH within one week, but it has a shorter residual effect of up to 1-2 months. Dolomitic limestone is a combination of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate and serves two purposes in the growing medium.
May 26, 2019· Dolomitic limestone is a type of rock that includes up to 50% dolomite. Normal limestone is primarily made up of calcite and aragonite, but dolomite forms in the stone when the calcium ions in the calcite part are replaced by magnesium ions — this process is called dolomitization. This type of rock was once referred to as magnesian limestone ...
May 23, 2011· When To Use Dolomite Lime? You should only use dolomite lime when you have a soil test showing a huge deficiency of magnesium in your soil. In other words, you can make use of calcitic lime rather than dolomite because it has about a 6:1 calcium to magnesium ratio, which has 30% to 40% higher calcium content compared to dolomite.
Dolomitic Lime. As the name suggests, dolomitic lime is manufactured by crushing dolomitic limestone down to very small pieces. As with agricultural lime, dolomitic lime works to increase the pH levels of acidic soil and return the earth to nearly neutral.

This is because calcitic limestone is readily available in our area and the manufacturing process requires minimal effort. Dolomitic limestone may also be relatively inexpensive, depending on how much supply is available in your locale. Both pelletized and liquid lime products will be more costly.
Mar 26, 2018· Difference between Limestone & Dolomite ? Limestone is a calcium carbonate mineral whereas dolomite is made of calcium magnesium carbonate. Sand, clay and silt are commonly found in limestone as impurities but not quite common in dolomite. Calcite limestone is usually more expensive than dolomite.
